We won in the Web Multi-Media Games, Contests, Presentations category and competed against entries from all our the world. It is really great to be recognized for an application that spreads positive messages for teens. 6th Annual It’s Time to Talk Day

Today marks Liz Claiborne Inc.’s sixth annual It’s Time to Talk Day. This day is dedicated to encouraging Americans to speak-up about domestic violence. People all around the country will be talking about this serious issue including schools, radio stations, businesses, government officials, etc. We are so proud to partner with Liz Claiborne for this amazing event and we are joined by other experts in the field such as MTV, Seventeen, Talk Radio News Service and many more. Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and there are a ton of ways you can support the cause. We put together a list of cool things you can do this month to help spread awareness.

Put a purple ribbon up as your facebook/twitter/myspace profile pic to show your support for ending domestic violence.
Post a link on your profiles to www.loveisrespect.org to spread healthy dating awareness and let your friends know about the awesome resources we have if they ever need help.
Send anti-dating violence awareness mass texts to your friends.
Organize an anti-dating violence rally at your school.
Submit an article on teen dating violence awareness to your school newspaper.
Write a letter to get a Teen Dating Abuse curriculum in your school; Dosomething.org has great info on the steps you need to take.
Create an anti-dating violence PSA and post it to your YouTube account.
Print out our Teen Dating Bill of Rights and post it around school (with permission from school officials).
Print out our quiz cards and hand them out at local events.
Create a LOVE Mashup and send it to your friends to promote healthy dating habits.

Become a Peer Ambassador!

We have big news! loveisrespect has just started recruitment for the Peer Ambassador Program! This is a national volunteer program opportunity and as a Peer Ambassador you would have the chance to work directly with loveisrespect to help shape our future by providing information, support and feedback about what teen dating abuse and real relationships look like in your communities, schools, etc. Not only that, you would get a free trip to Dallas, Texas to attend the initial meeting/training/ information-sharing weekend! Austin Leadership Forum on Healthy Teens

Some of our loveisrespect staff just participated in a really great forum last week. The Austin Leadership Forum on Healthy Teens was held at the ACC Eastview Campus on July 1st in Austin, TX. We gained some great knowledge about local strategies focused on keeping Austin teens safe and healthy. The leadership forum was held as part of ichoose 2009, where one of our staff members was a presenter. Our peer advocated were also present for training and volunteer efforts. Teens and Summer Jobs

Now that school is out and summer is here, many teens out there are looking for part time jobs to occupy their time. However, with the economy still a little shaky, finding a job may not be that easy.

What can a bored, unemployed teen do? Well, there are other options to keep busy. Many teens are choosing to make a difference and volunteer for a worthwhile cause instead. There are many wonderful organizations out there that rely on volunteers to help and may not have the money to hire paid staff. Not only is volunteering a great way to do something worthwhile but it pays off in the long run since philanthropic work looks really good on a resume or college application.

loveisrespect is always looking for peer volunteer advocates, so if you live in the central texas area and you are interested, check out our volunteer page. If you do not live in the area but are interested in helping fight dating violence, give our teen advocates a call at 1-866-331-9474 or 1-866-331-8453 TTY and they can help locate your local domestic violence organization.

February 2nd to the 6th is the fourth annual Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Week. Here at loveisrespect we are busy creating new LOVE Mashups and responding to calls and chats.

What are you doing? Is your school hosting an event? Can you add us to your Facebook or MySpace profile? Check out our GET INVOLVED page to see all the ways you can show your support of loveisrespect and join the efforts to end teen dating abuse. There are also tool kits for teachers to download and share with their classes. Check them out!

Hey, did you see High School Musical 3 or SAW IV?

In case you have been living under a rock (or have not seen the movie), we ran an ad before the start of movies in parts of California and in parts of Texas . The ad asks a simple question: “Does your relationship need a makeover?” The question makes you think about your current relationship, drawing attention to the fact that you have rights and deserve to be in a healthy relationship. We now have a quiz on our website (www.loveisrespect.org or on our Youtube account at ) that asks about your relationship.

We want to hear what you thought about our ad? Think about all the times you have to be quiet: at school, during a movie (especially High School Musical 3), at church, when your parents are talking to you… the list could go on forever. Basically, you have to be quiet forever, and your opinion is not highly valued. We think differently!

Tell us anything you want, good or bad. Was the ad cool or stupid? What parts were your favorites? Did you tell your friends about the ad? If you were in charge of making the ad, what would you have done differently?
