Have you seen Eminem’s new video, featuring Rihanna, Love the Way You Lie? The video portrays a violent relationship between two characters, but as actor Dominic Monaghan tells MTV news, ’”I think we tried as hard as we could to not glorify the violence, to try and explain that this was a relationship that is by no means ideal and a relationship that probably should have ended a lot sooner than it did.”‘

Apsylon teams up with loveisrespect to promote safe relationships

Have you heard of the celtic-rock band Apsylon? They have a really cool sound that blends classical, celtic rock and rock music. With the recent release of their debut album “Dreaming of Yesterday” they have teamed up with the National Domestic Violence Hotline and loveisrespect to raise awareness about the many forms of relationship abuse. Ten percent of their album sales will go toward The Hotline and loveisrespect to help us promote respectful, safe relationships. Ladies Learn About Dating Violence and Teen Pregnancy

South Carolina girls in the Midlands are listening to women who have been through the same things that they have. Last Thursday, they met to open up discussion on dating violence and teen pregnancy. The girls are learning more about situations before they fall into them. Read the story here.

Teens Open up About Technology and Dating Abuse

Did you know? There are 67 different ways to abuse someone with a cell phone. Liz Claiborne Inc. and the Education Development Center Inc. are going into classrooms for conversations about technology and dating abuse. Diane Beni teaches in the program and admits that “kids know more than we do. And the middle man is gone. No one is calling the house. No one is developing photos at the drug store.” Click here to see what else Columbia High students are talking about in class. The program will be in high schools nationwide.

Evansville Students Take to Streets to Stop Abuse

One in three teens are in an abusive relationship and Wisconsin students want to break the silence. For a second-year project called “Refuse 2 Bruise,” Evansvile High students painted windows on their city’s main street to take a stand against abusive relationships. Some wore t-shirts with “When push comes to shove, it’s no longer love.” One student, Janes, painted numbers on a cell phone to spread the message that abuse happens more through technology now. Dating Abuse is a Ticking Time Bomb

In the wake of the brutal murder of University of Virginia student Yeardley Love, educators, parents, and teen dating abuse and domestic violence organizations are rallying to address the serious and escalating issue of safe dating in order to prevent such a tragic event from occurring again.

According to a recent survey conducted by Liz Claiborne Inc. and the Family Violence Prevention Fund, nearly 1 in 3 teenagers who have been in a relationship report actual sexual abuse, physical abuse, or threats of physical abuse. These are very alarming statistics and as William L. McComb, CEO of Liz Claiborne Inc. phrases it – a ticking time bomb. Please click here to check out his thoughts on the issue.

Callout Card Design Winner – Lara Beck

Lara Beck’s winning slogan for the “That’s Not Cool” campaign won her a trip to Washington D.C. for the NFL Players Gala last month. She walked the gala’s red carpet after her simple slogan, “in a relationship, you love each other. (Not stalk each other.) Just thought you’d like to know,” was chosen as the national Callout Card design winner.

Lara is a junior at Washington High School in Massillon, Ohio and a part of the movement to help teens recognize dating violence when it happens. She feels that teens should always work on healthy relationships “so they know what they are looking for in a person.” She’s making a difference now by speaking out with a simple message. Changing Lives Theater Group

Changing Lives Youth Theatre Ensemble (CLYTE) is on tour in the central Texas area with “Perhaps Tomorrow,” their play about cyber bulling, girl aggression, rumors, homophobia and dating relationships. CLYTE is run by Theatre Action Project and SafePlace Austin and was created in 2003 to address these social issues. The program uses peer education and theater as tools for stopping the cycles of domestic and dating violence. Click here to check out the trailer for their current touring show.

Basketball Event Spotlights Teen Dating Violence

The 3rd Annual Hoops For Awareness Basketball Tournament kicked off on May 1st 2010 at the Lincoln Square Recreational Center in Oakland, CA. The event, which is sponsored by the Youth Advisory Council of API Legal Outreach brings awareness to teen dating violence. This is a great fundraising event held every year.
