You may know her as a member of the Fierce Five, setting the world abuzz with her team members at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Today, we’re flipping out over our announcement that Olympic gold medal gymnast Jordyn Wieber is the new official spokesperson of Mary Kay Inc.’s “Don’t Look Away” campaign. Mary Kay launched “Don’t Look Away” as an education and awareness campaign to show their commitment to helping young people have healthier and safer dating relationships free of abuse.
Not every teen can say they’ve been on an Olympic team, but as a recent high school graduate, Jordyn knows that dating violence is something a growing percentage of teens have experienced. She was shocked to learn that one in three young people is a victim of physical, emotional, or verbal abuse from a dating partner, and this statistic motivated her to become the spokesperson and cause champion for ‘Don’t Look Away’.
“My friends, teammates and a lot of my fans are in their teens,” Wieber explained. “As I speak in high school gymnasiums across the country to raise awareness of this growing epidemic and share information about the text-for-help program, I tell my peers that just like gymnastics, balance and boundaries are critical to healthy dating relationships.” If anyone knows about balance, it’s an Olympic gold medalist.
Jordyn’s no stranger to talking to others about healthy dating — she’s been an outspoken advocate for “Don’t Look Away’ in the past. Now, she’s taking her involvement to the next level, and we couldn’t be happier about it. As the face of the campaign, Jordyn will be helping us get the word out about our nationwide, 24-hour, seven days a week text helpline. By texting “loveis” to 22522, teens and young adults are connected safely and confidentially to our trained peer advocates for support, safety tips and referrals.
Here at loveisrespect, our advocates dedicate themselves to spreading awareness and education about teen dating violence, and it’s great to have support from other passionate groups and individuals. Help us welcome Jordyn to this winning team.
