Today we have a special message from one of our YAB members, Ashley, on how you can get involved with DVAM efforts this week.
As many of you know, October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). As a member of loveisrespect’s National Youth Advisory Board (LIR NYAB), I thought that it would be cool to invite you all to participate, nationwide, as we help raise awareness of this issue on October 30th, 2012 by wearing purple. Purple is the color of DVAM. We want this day to be a time to reflect upon and honor the lives that have been lost to domestic violence, and to promote awareness about this important issue.
As members of the LIR NYAB, this issue is very important to each of us. We want each of you to use social media and word of mouth to spread the message. We are hoping that everyone will participate in this event. With the use of technology and all of its advances, we anticipate reaching a very large number of people.
Here is a list of ways that you, can get involved and help raise awareness and spread the word about WR PRPL 4 LOVE Day 2012.
-WEAR PURPLE (clothing, hair ties/bows, jewelry, ribbons, nail polish, rubber bands for braces, shoes, face paint, etc.)
– Host a Candlelight Vigil
– Clothesline Project: write phrases or names of victims or survivors on shirts and hang them up either at school or elsewhere
– Chalking: Write statistics/facts in chalk on the ground for people to see
– Have the athletes and/or members of fraternities and sororities wear PURPLE
– Advertise: posters/flyers in bathrooms and around campus, create a Facebook Group, or contact a local radio station or newspaper.
-Speak to your local radio hosts/school hosts/school news and have them make an announcement
Whatever you decide to do to, have fun doing it! Take lots of pictures and post them on Twitter and Instagram! Tweet about it! Share it! (Use the #LIRWRPURPLE hashtag)
