Frequently Asked Questions: For Parents
The initial meeting is in Dallas, TX during the school year. Does this mean my child will fly alone? Is this event chaperoned? Where will my child stay?
Your child’s safety is our highest priority and we appreciate each parent who allows their teen to travel to Texas and participate in this Peer Ambassador program. We will work, to the best of our ability, to arrange direct flights and will have a loveisrespect Leadership Team member meet all teens at the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport to escort him/her to the hotel. In addition, parents and teens will be provided with detailed travel information prior to the event, with each teen getting the personal contact information of the loveisrespect Leadership Team member who will be meeting them at the airport.
During the weekend in Dallas there will be adult supervision at all times. All attendees will stay in the same hotel. Teens will be assigned a roommate of the same sex. Male and female participants will be assigned rooms on different floors. Loveisrespect Leadership will stay on the same floors with teens, and will maintain at least a one (adult) to three (teens) ratio to ensure safety. All staff and volunteers of loveisrespect have completed and passed a criminal background check prior to their employment.
What will my teen be asked to do? How will he/she be prepared to work on the issue of teen dating abuse?
Teens who become Peer Ambassadors will participate in a comprehensive training session that provides them with the basics of teen dating abuse, information on how to work with their peers, the use of social marketing to inform and educate online, and a big picture look at the work of loveisrespect, National Teen Dating Abuse Helpline. This information will help them when they return to their hometowns and will be asked to arrange local outreach efforts, produce or write materials about teen dating abuse, and be a positive role model for healthy dating.
If you have additional questions or concerns about any issue regarding your teen’s participation in the Peer Ambassador program, please contact Candice Hopkins, loveisrespect Director at chopkins@loveisrespect.org or (512) 794-1133.
