Power and Control Scenarios
The following content is intended for use by teachers, service providers, mentors or anyone else in a position to lead discussion with youth. The video diaries are enactments of each spoke on the Teen Power and Control Wheel and serve as a visual demonstration of the various forms of abuse represented on the wheel. The interactive wheel clicks through to the various video clips corresponding with each section. We have also provided tips following each set of video scenarios to educate teens on effective methods for handling each situation. Consider conducting your own discussion and brainstorming possible resolutions to the situations portrayed in the videos before viewing/reading the tips together.
Teen Power and Control Wheel
The Teen Power and Control Wheel is adapted from the Domestic Violence Power and Control Wheel and is customized to address dating violence issues experienced by teens. There are many forms of violence teens can experience in relationships and what people often do not realize is that most of the violence is not necessarily physical. Individuals often exert social status or employ techniques such as intimidation or peer pressure in order to control their partner. Often, teens may not even realize what they are experiencing is abuse and simply dismiss the red flags. The Teen Power and Control Wheel addresses these various types of abuse, with each spoke of the wheel covering a different tactic.
