Volunteer FAQ

What if I’m Not in Austin?

We're only conducting peer advocate trainings in Austin, but you can participate in our sister organization, Break the Cycle’s national volunteer program and join the movement against dating violence.

We are hoping to expand our peer advocate program outside of Austin soon. So feel free to contact us and we will keep your information on hand.

What are the Qualifications?

Potential volunteer advocates must:

  • Be 16-25 years of age.
  • Have the ability to listen well, actively and compassionately.
  • Have a friendly, flexible personality.
  • Be comfortable working in a socially conscious environment.
  • Be able to work within the agency’s guiding principles to empower callers.

How Many Hours Must I Commit?

All volunteers must complete an application and interview with our volunteer and training coordinator, as well as complete a criminal background check. After which, you must complete our 40 hour training and then we ask that you commit to two to four hours per week for a minimum of eight hours a month.

When is the Next Training?

Please contact our volunteer and training coordinator for more information about the latest schedule. Call 512-453-8117 ext 3102 or email volunteers@loveisrespect.org.

What if I Can’t Attend All of the Training?

Depending on what days you miss, we may be able to conduct a follow-up training with you or you may have to wait and attend a future session.

Can I Volunteer to Fulfill a Class Requirement?

Yes, but please let us know when you apply that you want your hours to count towards a class.  We also need to know ahead of time what evaluations or forms you need us to fill out.
