Inside the Advocate’s Studio: Kenny

I’m in this phase of working here in between being the new intern and being a highly trained member of the staff. It’s tough, tough work and it’s made my schedule quite crazy, but I wouldn’t give it up just because I’m not getting as much sleep at night. As long as victims of dating abuse aren’t all sleeping properly, I don’t want to be either.

I’ve learned so much in such a short amount of time, a lot of which I’ve brought into my own life. Here are some things that I’ve picked up:

The people are here to help. Even though we all have differing jobs, we all serve a common purpose of helping victims of dating abuse. The communications team at loveisrespect does just that – communicate. It’s so fun to sit in this office and listen to everyone shout back and forth between offices. Everyone here is so friendly and so committed, that it makes loveisrespect work really smoothly.

Relationships are all unique. It’s amazing how so many relationships can be spontaneously happening; yet each one is different. Like snowflakes, I no longer think it’s possible for two relationships to be exactly the same and here at loveisrespect we honor and validate that as the truth.

Watching people grow will be the most rewarding. There’s this stunning transformation that takes place when someone realizes and releases him or herself from an unhealthy relationship. After hearing the stories from victims and seeing how much more confident they are after getting out of an abusive relationship, I feel like empowering people to take control of their lives will be an amazing thing to get to witness and take part in.

As I said, I have much to learn. I am still a novice, a level 1, a white belt and a child in the world of dating abuse. But I’m making progress. I’ll keep posting occasionally as time goes by to let you know what I’ve learned.

In the meantime, call us at 1-866-331-9474, text “loveis” to 22522, or visit www.loveisrespect.org to chat with us.
