Today marks the start of National Teen Dating Violence and Prevention Month and this special month was started off right by none other than the president of the United States! Yesterday, President Obama made it official by issuing a proclamation highlighting the importance of this awareness month. In his address, President Obama explained why teens were a crucial audience for this message of healthy relationships:
“Adolescents in controlling or violent relationships may carry these dangerous and unhealthy patterns into future relationships. The time to break the cycle of teen dating violence is now, before another generation falls victim to this tragedy.”
President Obama also discussed the resources available to teens and parents to find more information. We at loveisrespect are pretty thrilled that he mentioned us. He also references the dating abuse info provided by The Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women and dating abuse info provided by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Both are great places to find additional information. President Obama gave these words to inspire us in the upcoming month:
“During National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month — and throughout the year — let each of us resolve to do our part to break the silence and create a culture of healthy relationships for all our young people.”
