A note to the survivor

By Kate K., a love is respect Youth Council member

Dear Survivor,

I know you have been through a lot. Life has not been easy for you for so long that you have forgotten your smile. But today, at this moment, I want you to take a deep breath and read these words. I know what it’s like to feel like the whole world is collapsing in on you, like you are helpless. I know what it’s like to have sleepless night after sleepless night, and what it’s like to go days without eating because of the circumstances and the stress. You may be out of money or out of hope, you may be lost and alone, you may be scared. But one thing I know for sure is you are resilient. You are capable, and you are strong. No one and no thing made you strong, you were born that way. You get up every day and you face the world. You wipe your own tears away, you heal yourself and you are there, present in your life, and you will get through this. It will not always feel this heavy, so lean into those around you and hold on, please hold on, because you are valuable and deserving of all the good things coming your way. You are beautiful and brave, and just because they didn’t see that does not take it away from you. You have gone to hell and back and you are still here and that is astounding! You have survived more than most will comprehend or understand and still manage to provide, to glide through your life with boundless grace. The importance of your love, thoughts, wisdom, and presence in this world is needed. People need you, you need you. Just breathe. Even if all you can do today is breathe, it’s okay. Just breathe.  You are deserving of peace and hope. Take heart that you can have hope, no one can take this fire, this light away from you. What is in front of you is so much better than what you have left behind. You are not your past, you are not your mistakes, you are not your failures and your losses, you’re not a number and you’re not damaged.  You are a human being deserving of space, respect, happiness and love.

I know you can do this. I believe in you, so please keep fighting, keep showing up. You will make it and you will rise again. Your whole life is right in front of you.

Spread your wings and fly.

Sincerely,

A fellow survivor.
